Albanian President Bujar Nishani is due to convey the National Security Council to discuss police’s failure to arrest the international fugitive Klement Balili, an Albanian national accused of international drug trafficking.

Klan Television has learned from the office of Albanian President that the decision was taken upon the request of Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta. The exact date of the meeting is not made public yet.

In a letter directed to the head of state, Meta said Wednesday that Klement Balili, a person with serious problems with the law, was not arrested yet to be put in front of justice, despite the international arrest warrant.

Meta called for a National Security Council meeting after the concerns voiced by the international partners about the inaction of Albanian institutions.

The meeting would “demonstrate the reliability of Albanian institutions and other parts of state apparatus in addressing the specific responsibilities and the commitment they have in dealing with such cases that impact national security,” Meta said.

Greek authorities issued an arrest warrant for Klement Balili on May, 12th 2016, upon accusations for international drug trafficking.

The warrant arrived at Interpol Tirana on May 17, but his full file of 1700 pages arrived at Albanian capital only in December last year.

The issue was handed over by the Prosecution for Serious Crimes, which issued another arrest warrant for the fugitive.  Albanian police has searched for him in some of his properties in Saranda and Divjaka, but has failed to find him.

This was labeled as a “failure of Albanian institutions” by the U.S. Ambassador in Albania Donal Lu./tvklan.al
