3 000 police forces under investigation, Albanian Minister of Interior says
Albanian Minister of Interior said Tuesday that about 3 000 police forces are under criminal or disciplinary investigation, accused of being corrupt, abusing with the office, or for not doing the job.
Saimir Tahiri made the comments during a meeting with traffic police forces in capital Tirana.
The Minister said that the socialist government is determined in the fight against corruption, especially inside police.
“This is not a campaign, this is not an action issue; this is our approach to make the police clean in face of corruption,” Tahiri said.
He said that only during January 39 Albanian citizens were arrested for trying to corrupt police forces.
Minister’s comments come as the sacked Minister of Justice, Ylli Manjani, and Environment Minister, Lefter Koka, have accused police forces of corruption and failing to arrest an international fugitive, Klement Balili.
Balili is accused of being part of an international drugs trafficking network.
The two ministers coming from the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) have caused a rift with the Socialist Party (PS), which leads the Albanian ruling coalition./tvklan.al
