“Albania met the requirements, we must fulfill the promise!”
The European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, declared on Thursday in an interview, that Albania has fulfilled the requirements to start the EU negotiations. In an interview for
Der Standard
he said the opening of accession negotiations for Albania, has already a green light.
“At the moment there is an uproar in the region. The cause was our expansion strategy, which opens a prospect for all states. In Kosovo, there has been an unacceptable ratification of the border agreement with Montenegro. Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria have signed a friendship agreement and has also started negotiations between Greece and Albania. The judicial review process in Albania is in full motion as the first priority for us. So from our point of view, Albania has met the requirements to start the review process. Based on this you can do an analysis to see the criteria for opening the chapters. I am convinced that Albania, after the Macedonian decision, can do the same. Opportunity for reform is stronger during negotiations. I am convinced that France and the Netherlands will also see “half full glass”. Our credibility is part of our value system. If we make a promise, and the other party meets the requirements, then we have to agree. If that does not happen, it will affect other countries in the region”
