Fleckenstein comments on EU negotiations with Albania
Reporter for Albania in the European Parliament, Knut Fleckenstein, expressed optimism about the opening of Albania’s accession negotiations with the European Union. Fleckenstein says the European Parliament supports Albania’s advancement in the integration process.
“We will give our recommendation and in the end the member states will decide on the Council of Ministers. But this time I have a good anticipation, that there is a real chance that the decision will be taken”.
Fleckenstein states that there is no member country that has been expressed in principle against launching accession negotiations with Albania, but during this time the progress of the reforms will be verified.
“There is no objection in principle to the opening of Albania’s EU membership negotiations. There are some questions as to how the organized crime is being pursued, as is the Vetting process going on. I think that the balance of Albania is pretty positive and we can present this picture to member states that require more explanation”.
On 17 April, the European Commission will publish a progress report on this issue. The focus of attention is the progress of the Vetting process and Justice Reform./tvklan.al
