Frontex takes control on Albania’s borders
Albania becomes the first country in the Western Balkans to sign an agreement with the European Union on border control.
Without giving further details, Commissioner Avramopoulos and Minister Xhafaj praised this agreement as the first step of Albania’s accession to the European Union.
Dimitris Avramopoulos: “This agreement will enable future teams to be deployed in Albania by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. The agreement will ensure better management of irregular migration in the common interest of the European Union”.
Fatmir Xhafaj: “This is an important agreement that will help us get qualified assistance with regard to border management”.
Other challenges, according to commissioner Avramopoulos, are to reduce the number of asylum seekers, the fight against radicalism, organized crime, or drug and drug trafficking.
Avramopoulos: “Lower the number of abusers in Schengen. Prevention is very important when it comes to drugs, because in many cases this is a matter for vulnerable people”.
Fatmir Xhafaj: “Albania will no longer be on the map of countries that cultivate cannabis, to show determination and concrete results in the fight against organized crime through the “Power of Law” operation, whose first results are encouraging.
The Commissioner for Immigration also said that Albania could apply with special projects in the fight against drug trafficking in EU funds./tvklan.al
