Greece requires to wipe Chameria out of school maps and textbooks
Greece seeks removal from the maps and textbooks in Albania of the Chameria term and any other references that Athina regards as irredentist. The request was submitted to the Albanian side as an indisputable condition in the joint commission for solving problems between the two countries.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said in a letter to the independent MP Haris Theoharis who had asked for clarification whether the issue of nationalist terms in the textbooks of these countries was discussed in the talks between Albania and Macedonia . This is the document dated February 7, which the MP has shared with his followers in Twitter. Kotzias writes that the Greek government has made it clear to the Albanian party that anything unacceptable in the contents of the texts should be removed as soon as possible.
“During the recent meeting of the Greek-Albanian Experimental Commission of Greek-Albanian Experts, the Greek side has insisted on deleting from the textbooks unacceptable and insulting the unity of our country (Greece) such as ‘Albanian territories in Greece’. But even the expressions and maps in which the Greek geographical region appear with the name “Chameria”, which, unfortunately, demonstrate that the Albanian state remains trapped in anachronistic nationalist rhetoric and irredentist, harmful and risky attitudes in the first place for itself Albania”.
In Greek maps, the area of Chameria’s territory is named after the two provinces Thesprotia and Etolo-Akarnania. During a televised debate on Greek state television, Kotzias said the Cham issue did not exist and denied that it was discussing the negotiations with Albania, although Tirana has repeatedly demanded that it be discussed in bilateral talks./tvklan.al
