Opposition’s leader meeting with MEP Fleckenstein
Democratic Party leader Lulzim Basha received EU rapporteur for Albania, Knut Flekenstein. He shared with him his concerns about the political situation in the country and post-election situation in Albania.
According to Basha, these elections showed that the causes of the opposition for decriminalization, fight against drugs and free and fair elections are the most vital causes for the country today.
Basha noted the fact that EU member states, EU institutions, but also Europol, are already highlighting the problem of drug cultivation and trafficking in Albania and the rise of organized crime, not only in Albania, but also in EU countries.
He stressed that
“the Democratic Party is openly fighting drugs cultivation of Albania for the last four years, and the situation would be much better if there was more attention provided from the international institutions. Unfortunately today, such reports have fueled the discussion of the visa regime for Albanians “.
“The recent elections again proved this, where the involvement of organized crime and drug money produced a fictitious majority that does not represent the will of Albanian citizens,” Basha told MEP Fleckenstein.
The DP chairman also spoke about electoral reform, which he said was the first step to address some of these issues, in particular through electronic voting and counting and biometric identification of voters.
“These changes are essential for the fate of the elections in Albania and the minimization of the voting sales phenomenon. Likewise, there is a need for reform of the political system in Albania to limit and control power, starting with a parliament that is not just a government tool but its oversight and controller. Only free elections can restore confidence and hope and stop the exodus of Albanians leaving to the European Union because they are denied the right to bring change by vote in their country, “said Lulzim Basha/tvklan.al
